Health and Safety
Power networks and generation sites carry inherent risks.
We are committed to ensuring the safety of our staff, contractors and the general public. We have strategies and plans in place to minimise any potential risks associated with Manawa Energy’s assets and operations.
Safety around dams and stations
We want anyone who is near our dams and their associated waterways to be safe at all times. Here is some advice to help people stay safe around our generation assets.
Before you dig or work near lines
Before you work or excavate close to Manawa Energy’s overhead power lines, you must first gain our written permission.
Information for contractors
If you’re a contractor coming to work on a Manawa Energy site, there are things you need to do prior to arriving.
Our Compliance
Manawa Energy has a comprehensive Public Safety Management Plan. This aims to minimise risk of injury to the general public and risk of damage to property that may result from our assets and operations. The plan complies with the NZS7901:2008 Safety Management System for Public Safety. It spans the asset lifecycle including construction, maintenance and operation.
Manawa Energy’s safety planning also involves full compliance with the following New Zealand Safety Regulations:
Health and Safety at Work Act 2015
In an emergency, call 111
If someone has been shocked, don’t touch them. Disconnect the power source or move the source away with a non-conductive object like a wooden broom handle. Call 111 immediately.
Treat any fallen power lines as live. Do not go near the lines or any trees or branches that are touching them.
If people or animals are trapped by downed lines, do not try to approach them. Have them stay in place until emergency crews arrive or advise that electricity has been disconnected.
Electricity from lines can jump – stay at least 8 metres away at all times.
